The Sound of a Plant Dying

Installation. Silk, steel, vellum, digital projection, audio. 2017

Audio recorded by Dr Kim Ritner and mixed by Matt O’Neil. Each pop sound corresponds to a plant cell embolizing, or becoming pressurized with air so water can no longer be transported through the column. After a few cells embolize, it is still possible for the plant to reroute water via a longer path up the column–but too many embolisms and the column becomes blocked, killing the plant.
